Summary
Hanoi's University of Architecture implemented
an Urban Management program, as well as a special research group
and program, with support of the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA) and collaboration of the University of Montréal.
The five-year research program aims to promote a gender element
in the management of Hanoi's urban neighbourhood environments.
Vietnam's cities have grown considerably in
the past few years and rapid urbanization has put tremendous
pressure on urban infrastructure and environments. This resulting
environmental degradation strongly affects women and children.
Women are important social actors and the concept of gender
has gradually been introduced in many social and environmental
programs. However there is still work to be done in promoting
a gender approach and creating desired changes at different
levels of government - this is precisely the goal of the Department
of Gender and Urban Development's research program. The program
advocates research-based activities as the most appropriate
method of action considering that research findings should be
used to better inform the development of concrete practical
applications.
The research program relies on a large partnership
of women's associations, public environmental and urban management
organizations, local administrations, etc. Thus far, the program
has undertaken case studies in Hanoi neighbourhoods, educated
young people - particularly on environmental protection, and
identified specific training needs. The research program has
also helped to identify certain challenges in implementing on-the-ground
practices in Vietnam.
