Regina

A little about Regina…

The City of Regina is a large urban centre. The overall population of Regina is approximately 200,000. Regina has 16 surrounding First Nations Bands and a large number of Métis People. The Aboriginal community in Regina has risen tremendously over the last five years and it is now estimated to be about 40,000. For more information on the City of Regina: http://www.regina.ca/

The Women of the Dawn Counselling Centre and Regina Indigenous Women (RWI) (www.reginaindigenouswomen.com) are the partners working on the pilot site in the WICI initiative. Violence against women has been a priority issue for these organisations.

Women of the Dawn has offered counselling services to Aboriginal Women with a particular emphasis on residential school survivors since 1993. They are currently active on the campaign around missing Aboriginal women in Regina and across Canada. They are the founders and organisers of the First Nations Awards and have just completed the 12th Annual Awards Celebration. The Awards celebrate First Nations successes in various fields (such as, business, arts and entertainment, education, journalism, medicine and health, etc.). They are currently working on project to offer housing for Aboriginal Women in transition.

The Regina Indigenous Women is relatively young organisation that seeks to build the capacity of the Aboriginal community in Regina and more specifically to develop understanding of the Urban Aboriginal Strategy and to increase skills in proposal development.

The co-ordinator of Women of the Dawn currently sits on a municipal committee called the Regina Inner City Exchange Partnership which bringing together federal, provincial, municipal and community representatives to coordinate policies and programs in North Central Regina. The priority areas of this group are housing and infrastructure, crime and safety, business and economic development, health and human services, education and community development. Women of the Dawn was included in the Committee because of their many years of work with aboriginal women and safety.

These organisations will work with the North Central Community Association on projects related to the building of safer communities for Aboriginal women and girls. The North Central Community is the area in Regina with the highest proportion of Aboriginals. It is a neighbourhood that has been designated by the Inner city community partnerships and by the national programme "Action for Neighbourhood Change" for the inter-sectoral and intergovernmental action to promote community development.
